State of the Shiki
Apr. 15th, 2014 07:56 pmTo prove I haven't just been sitting on my butt this month that I took off to edit, my personal proof reading is complete up to Chapter 3 (and partway through 4, but 1-3 is complete). Tried asking friends to proof read but then remembered all my friends are imaginary so it was really just my own proof reading, again. Fixed typos, cleaned up some grammar, clarified some word choices and performed the following more major edits:
NOTE TO FOREIGN TRANSLATORS, YOU MAY WANT TO GO BACK AND CHECK/EDIT YOUR TRANSLATIONS ACCORDINGLY!!
Changed all Ichino, Nino and Sanno bridges to First, Second and Third Bridges,
Omigawa river to just the Omi river consistently (both were in use),
all 'all night vigils' to wakes as the vigils are decidedly not all nighters,
stuck with obaa-chan and ojii-chan after all since Nii-san is going to end up in common use with Natsuno and Akira soon and I had to culture note the non-familial use of these terms anyways,
changed manager to 'funeral manager' to make it more clear.
changed 'mounds' to tumulus/tumuli to be more specific.
added a short missing line of dialogue (Shuuji's age) to Chapter 3 when Fuuki is talking to the police.
Tried to add tags for every single named character physically appearing or having dialogue in each chapter, no matter how minor.
Added a culture notes for:
Keyari spears
Non-familial use of familial honorifics (Nii-chan, Obaa-chan, etc.)
Natsuno's name
Family register
Major update/clarification on Yuge-shuu (changed all 'Vapors' to Yuge-shuu; cleaned up the translation in Chapter 1-1 regarding this).
Compiled those chapters into a PDF. Compiling all culture and translation notes into a separate PDF, arranging them into General Notes (things MUST know to understand the story) to go before the story and an appendix of chapter specific notes, a few images, and a credits page for the images.
For reference, with the standard font size being 12 Arial, Chapter 1 in English is 68 pages in Word. In the Japanese Word (in Japanese) file, it's 44. In the physical novel (in Japanese), it's 55.
As an idle curiosity, who all is with us here besides airlynx and 8D? (I'd still keep up the translation just for youse guys if it IS just you.)
Do I need to keep track of changes I make for translators?
I've had three people say they were translating Shiki into their own languages (Polish, Spanish and Russian). Is that still going on?

Also doing the requested chapter summaries as I go, will include them in the 'Part' portions when finished. (See tag shiki: parts)
Prologue - On a November night, a fireman on watch reads an essay in a magazine about the mountain village of Sotoba and its trade in lumber for coffins and funeral paraphernalia when that very village goes up in flames.
Chapter 1 - During a late night July festival to drive evil from the village, a moving van enters town only to turn back around turning around. Villagers all about Sotoba wonder if it was related to the mysterious western style mansion called Kanemasa that was constructed earlier that year, whose owners have yet to show themselves or move in.
Chapter 2 - There's a hit-and-run in the village by a fancy foreign car. Officer Takami hears that the car was seen going north towards the Monzen and Yamairi neighborhoods, then again leaving the village at night. Murasako Mieko from Yamairi picks up medication for her neighbor Ohkawa Gigorou, mentioning that he had had a guest in a splendid car, then left town for the night. Now he and her husband Hidemasa seemed sick. Gotouda Shuuji hears of this and goes to visit his sick uncle, returning home where his mother Gotouda Fuki finds him covered in blood yet uninjured, and now in a sickly daze himself. She tries to call her brother and his wife, Hidemasa and Mieko, but there's no answer. With a certain fear she can't place, she tells nobody of the state Shuuji had returned in. The local elderly gather, confirming that all of the local hokora and Jizo have been destroyed. Some wonder if it wasn't the local ne'er-do-well, Ohkawa Atsushi. The only destruction he's done during this time period is sneaking onto the Kanemasa lot and kicking a garage shutter before fleeing with a feeling of being watched, despite the mansion supposedly being yet uninhabited. But there are rumors of lights being seen, voices being heard...
Chapter 3 - Local acting-head monk Seishin goes to Yamairi to try to contact the Murasakos who haven't been able to be reached to contact about their nephew Shuuji's death. There he finds the three residents of Yamairi dead. According to autopsy, the two old men died some some days before Mieko who died only a day or so ago, without attempting to contact anyone else about the death of a neighbor who ate with them nightly or her husband's corpse right there in her own house. Fuuki fears a connection but is never explicitly asked, and thus never does tell the police about Shuuji going to Yamairi right around their estimated time of death.
