Merry Christmas! It's not much. In fact, you could even say it "isn't too much at all...."

Merry Christmas and thanks for the 6 months of support and feedback! For those of you not into this side of the fandom or under-age, I'll try to whip out another chapter today and tomorrow as well for Christmas.
For those of you into it, my image editing/text setting skills are non-existent, but I hope you're able to enjoy it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)On which I mentioned beforehand: I've tried to translate some, but I cannot differentiate between jibun. How do you do that? X_X
On the osananajimi subject: I'm quite sure it doesn't refer to the people on the pickup car with Toshio. First they're only random people, second Yuuki is the only person he talks to that moment. (much different from the anime)
Thirdly, I'm quite sure Toshio was looking at the temple direction. The very last sentence right before the epilogue says: Toshio once more looks up at the northern mountain. The flame is delving deeper into the mountain temple -- swallowing everything. (I wrote 'swallowing' but it uses -iku, did I get it wrong? Is there a more proper way to translate it?)
There's nothing romantic about it though, because even if he indeed thinks about Seishin, it's only about deep realization/understanding on his part. Both understanding himself and Seishin, I think, but I still don't get the jibun, so I can't say for sure.

The -iku add on to a verb just means it goes forth doing the verb it's appended to, so the flame goes forth swallowing everything.
Summary of today's lessons:
Seishin wo jibun no mono toshite totte-iku.
(S)He takes Seishin as his/her own (with the implication that it's an ongoing thing, not 'taking him once and done'; it's something (s)he goes forth doing for a non-sepcified length of time).
You decide who the subject is.
I only have this doujinshi and Happy Family Planning (same circle). I've asked to buy others direct from the circles but they don't ship/sell unless you're in Japan, alas. There's a Seishin/Toshio one I saw that was mostly chibi gag manga that I'm trying to get my hands on; I can't remember the name. I know of another one called "The village is surrounded by love" which is a Tosio/Seishin and Natsuno/Tohru one by several circles that I'm trying to get ahold of. There's a Toshio/Seishin printed fanfic doujinshi based on the novel back before the anime/manga were made that I've seen and am passingly interested in but not really actively seeking. That makes up all of the print ones I know about at this time.
Pixiv has a few shorter ones, many very good. There was an event called "To-fest" and I think another this year called "As water to flowers, love to Toshio" which were Toshio-uke events; most of the circles participating seemed to be Tatsumi/Toshio, but I believe there was mention of someone submitting some Seishin/Toshio (the group that did the 4koma one mentioned above drew an ad for ToFest so I assume they're involved).
Re: 8D
(Anonymous) 2013-12-25 12:27 am (UTC)(link)About the osananajimi subject: Toshio is reminiscing: -Maitta na... Aitsu no iutta toori ka (toori? Tori?)
-Sou, osananajimi no iutta you ni.
I translated it as (please correct me if I'm wrong!) 'I gave up...' that was what he said, wasn't it? Really, that's what his childhood friend said.
Gave up about what though, I don't know, and I don't think it's addressed there. (or is there another meaning to it?) So whether Toshio is referring to Seishin, or another person who's with him hunting down the Shiki, I still can't tell. I feel that it's weird that Seishin's name isn't used here, if he's really thinking about Seishin that is. After that though, the series of deep realization begins and Toshio's looking up at the kitayama again. (the others are looking at where he's looking up at too) Then he tells the guys there to assemble at Chigusa for a bit, to which after saying that, he looks up at the kitayama again, which ends at the 'swallowing everything'.
About the 1.4 which we discussed the other day though, I was actually referring to when Toshio says 'If I lost that many clients, at least Seishin will be raking it in.' that's kinda unprompted isn't it? (Which serves as the moment Toshio is recognized as Seishin's close friend by us readers)
On the unrelated note: I don't have a pixiv account, I wonder if I should make one.
Re: 8D
You're pretty close; I think it's the toori throwing your off. Toori means 'according to' or 'along with'. There's a Death Note meme 'Keikaku toori' which means 'according to plan.' Just as planned, etc.
My translation would he:
(Assuming the text is:
Maitta na... aitsu no itta toori ka.
Sou. Osananajimi no itta you ni.)
'Well, damn.... Just like he said, huh?'
Yes, just as his childhood friend had said.
Oh, yeah, the mention of Seishin there was pretty unprompted! Forgot that. He seems to enjoy pointing out the cryptic continuity between their jobs. He did it with Tatsumi, too.
I enjoy Pixiv. It's easier to browse with an account since it keeps prompting you to log in to look at all of an artist's works or things under specific tags, etc. but if you don't use Pixiv in general, it's probably not too useful, naturally.
Re: 8D
(Anonymous) 2013-12-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)The 'swallowing' here is 'nomikondeiku', in this case, can it really be translated as 'swallowing'? I'm on my mobile, can't paste from the novel (because my romanization may be incorrect) and besides, this page again doesn't come up on my laptop... but I can paste in different section.

Yup, 'goes on swallowing' or just swallowing's fine. I'm at home right now, so I can enter Japanese! 飲み込んでいく is how it probably looks. It's drink (飲む) + engulf (込む) + go (行く), so it's like a triple compound verb.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-25 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)Double-triple compund verbs are one of many things which makes Japanese interesting, but too often it has caused me headache. Well, I think I bring that upon myself because I only know aaaa littleeee of Japanese but already pick a novel like Shiki to learn from because I'm impatient. Sometime ago when I had lots of time I tried to analyze some texts (first paragraphs of second volume of Shiki) to translate them for myself but bet that has many mistakes too. (I may paste some here for you to see later)
I'll also learn from some articles I bookmarked yesterday. :>

Shiki's a hell of a work to pick up as a beginner. You might want to try reading the manga raw instead; you already have a rough guide on what it says, and it has furigana which helps a lot. Even that's kind of tough; you might try some more basic manga like Yotsuba to or shounen/shoujo manga aiming for a younger crowd (as Shiki is technically shounen--between the medical babble and Seishin's archaic novel excerpts though, it's not necessarily an easy thing to start with).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 06:29 am (UTC)(link)...and by the way, I've solved the problem with my laptop. I feel kinda dumb. The reason my laptop couldn't view your certain posts was because what I bookmarked was your shiki-tagged entries page, and those posts aren't tagged as shiki.
Also, I wanna learn drawing/coloring digitally. Since you seem to be able to, any suggestions of guides to learn from? What's the program used for this? Is a tablet an absolute necessity? My friend colored some of my drawings in the past, so I'm aware that one may be able to scan some manual drawings and color them digitally but, I figure a tablet may provide more advantages. But again, a tablet is bound not to be cheap and I'm afraid I won't use it so often because I get bored a lot. But I figure it'll be easier for me if I'm able to draw/color digitally. (when I face difficulties, I tend to give up easily haha (especially when I'm coloring. I can draw more than I can color))

I'm not much of an artist at all. I have no tablet, but because if that I have to mouse-trace over a lot of my scans to get clean line art. Find a program that's free/in your price range, Google for a guide on how to do the basic functions (layers, masks, brushes) and from there I think you just kinda have to feel it out. I don't know what your style is; I'm just a copycat, myself, I have no style to admire, and thus the specific program's features are fairly unimportant if it has the basics. The better artists who have more natural looking work go ahead and use their own style. I'm a sad amateur who likes to excuse flaws with "well, that's just how the characters look in the source material."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:35 am (UTC)(link)Ugh. I learned some of photoshop in high school but I've forgotten most if not all of them. (they're basic image editing too, not coloring/drawing, but they ought to be useful) finding guides to learn from (including how to draw anatomy) is in order.

I think the image editing/text setting looked pretty professional here! I liked the font choice, and it was constant throughout, which is the important thing, I hate font shifts. Like one time I was reading a manga with the usual Comic Sans and then suddenly...Papyrus...
And as usual thank you for the excellent and continuous translations! I am so happy I found this project, and I'm excited every time it's updated! Keep it up ^__^

You get early sneak peaks at doujinshi! You get pushed into free labor. In other news, Takami x Atsushi is clearly hands down the hottest pair in Shiki. I have seen your picture and shared it; it will convert the masses, who will shout: "Why are doujinshi of it rarer than even ToshioxSesihin?!"
no subject
Step aside, Seishin! Move over, Mutou! Y'all are out, and The Next Top Shiki Pairing is in.
Then the black market dealings will start. On the dark streets of London, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro, trench-coat clad Shiki fans will meet in secret, exchanging Atsumi fanart and fanfiction right under the noses of the police.
Buuuut, that has given me the idea of making a brave attempt at making an Atsumi doujinshi of my own. I can see it now: yaoi hands, sparkling eyes, shoujo bubbles...

Gay porn? Don't be lewd! I just want to educate young readers about what true love is by following the footsteps of the strong lead protagonist Atsushi as he demonstrates his devotion to the brazen and brash Officer Takami (in my headcanon Takami is seme) without resorting to physical relationships. So if there are groinal conjunctions, they will take place after marriage thank you very much.
I don't know what's scarier: Atsumi porn or Atsumi fluff.
no subject
That's kind of like asking whether getting punched in the left kidney or right kidney is worse, there.
no subject
The worst fear is the fear of the unknown--not knowing what Takami and Atsushi get up to in the dark.
no subject
This was great. I have no idea if it was in character or not but it felt like they had a character that wasn't 'uke' and 'seme'. That plus the fact that you picked this one to translate suggests that it was really good!
And it was hot, of course.
no subject
All current novel readers who comment regularly seem to support the pair so I Devil's Advocate against it actually being canon in the comments because it's my job as a translator to be as objective as possible, but setting that duty aside I currently think that 'Seishin has romantic feelings of some nature towards Ozaki' is a supportable reading. Less sure on Ozaki, but at least one reader sees Ozaki as the one with the crush and Seishin as hating him covertly. What's in character is really hard to pin down here. Unlike most works, there's not a lot of "feelings persevere through any trial!" going on in this canon. Just about everyone is awful.
Come to think of it, this doujinshi spends a few pages on your favorite kink, huh? Add to that a purple-haired, glasses wearing, self-torturingly idealistic monk who can decently be argued to canonically have a crush on his married/otherwise involved male friend... Hrrrrrmmm. I just can't imagine what the draw might be to you who is not into this fandom.
no subject
No, of course not. Completely out of left field for me.

Monk ends up with a loli anyways.

Perhaps someday you'll crave that Fate/Zero feel again, with less world building babble. Shiki is in some ways similar to that, only without the bad ass dramatic fight scenes. Shiki will be here. Being horrible.

There's more likelihood that I'll just read dumb shipping fanfic on FF.net first!
...which I'm actually on that now so that says absolutely nothing.

You realize since I tend to like misery, any story I co-author has a decent likelihood of going unhappy directions, right?

...There's a known character death at the end of chapter/episode 1, and some fairly graphic corpses in the first few panels/seconds, so I won't recommend starting the anime/manga if that's not your bit.
Alternately, anyone reading this who plays Seishin and wishes to be kind to you could request a non-locked PSL/meme/etc.
Or you could say what has you interested in the pair and I can try to throw out a small fic or pic based on that.
