Shiki Novel Translations 3.17.1

"Mom, how are you feeling?"

Breakfast in hand, Kanami slid open the door to her mother's room, and that's when she noticed something was wrong with Tae.

"Mom!"

She had to call a doctor. ---Or would it be better to call an ambulance? The Ozaki Hospital had just had a misfortune. What if, just like when Motoko's household brought Shihori in, she went only to find that the hospital was closed?

As she hesitated, a strange sound leaked from Tae. Her feet kicked at the futon as she made that sound. As if trying to push herself up from below, two, three times her stomach rose up. On her red speckled face, the color purple began to splotch. Spew tinged with blood came from her mouth.

"Mom!" Kanami hurried to wipe the bubbling mess. Shaking her several times, she knew she had to call an ambulance. But she had set her mind on not turning her eyes from Tae even just to stand up and go to the phone. It looked as if she didn't even have that much time to spare.

Tae spit up bubbling blood once more, and then let out a sound that seemed to be pushing out from the depths of her throat. Her opened eyes rolled back to show the whites, and her legs weakly kicked at the futon. ---And that was the end.

Suddenly Tae stopped moving. She tried shaking her in earnest but all that happened was that her hand that had been pulled from the futon curled faintly. Even that much had shortly ceased, and Kanami knew that Tae was dead. She tried putting her ear to her chest, but she didn't hear anything. Taking a spoon from the tray, she plated it beneath her nose but the spoon didn't cloud. She was not breaking.

Kanami sat, despondent. The zousui on the tray was still letting off steam. That was how little time had passed. In just that franction of time, Tae had crossed over the nigh uncrossable.

Suppressing her rising tears, Kanami stood. She put in a phone call to Toshio. Toshio hurried over and confirmed her death.

"I thought to call an ambulance, but I was worried about taking my eyes off of her even just to make the call."

Toshio nodded sympathetically to Kanami's words.

"Even if it rushed, an ambulance would take about twenty minutes just to get here. It took even me about that long. ......Probably, either way, we wouldn't have made it in time."

Is that so, Kanami nodded. She felt just a hint of salvation.

She had Toshio fill out a death certificate and called the mourning crew. The entire time, she had a feeling of this finally having happened. A funeral from Kanami's own household was happening. ---Yes, even though it had been fortunate not to have happened until now. Kanami and Tae were just the two of them, so maybe that was why they had avoided the misfortunate to now.

After calling the temple, she called Motono. Motoko only gave an unemotional "Oh."

It had hurt but it made sense as it seemed Shigeki was not doing well. If she thought about it, Motoko would be alone if she lost Shigeki. Of course, she had her extended family, but.

There was no shortage of this theater of tragedy. In particular, since this summer, it seemed as if there was a production of it every single day. It wasn't something that had befallen Kanami alone.

But she couldn't stop the tears.

(Why did this happen, I wonder?)

What was the cause of--of this?
