Someone paid for this one a year ago, but neither they nor I had a Nyaa account to upload/offer it to the video host. Since it's been a year and I can't reach the person who paid for it to ask if they want it shared, I can't really imagine they just wanted to hoard it to themselves, and Wayama Yama's works are becoming more popular with Karaoke Iko! and Muchuu sa, Kimi ni getting animes, I'm putting it out there for anyone who wants it.

Odd Taxi Fes 2022 - Event Report Translation

Odd Taxi Fes was held on June 18th, 2022. There was an afternoon event and an evening event with musical acts and cast members discussing the characters and doing a skit written by Konomoto Kazuya (head series writer). As it seems we're not getting a release of the full script, much less a recording, I thought I'd document the summary so it's available somewhere in English.

The full report by Mixi User (id:429476) includes the reporter's thoughts and insights into the event, I'm just translating their summaries and dialogue. The reporter went to the evening event, of the two, and it was about 90 minutes total.

The MC was Inoue Yusuke of Non Style (a comedy duo with seiyuu Ishida Akira, also not related to Odd Taxi) who also doesn't seem to have direct relevance to the series. (The earlier event was MCed by comedy due New York, also with no direct tie to the series)

Odd Taxi Quality of Life Improvement Subtitles

These are the Pony Canyon official subs for Odd Taxi, only I've added song lyrics and culture notes. They synch with the DVD/BD, but if you're using Crunchyroll rips you might need to adjust the timing as streaming rips tend to come with an intro.

I might've accidentally corrected a line here or there because while inside the file I was thinking of it as if it were my own subtitles, but the official subtitles aren't bad or in need of a complete overhaul. I was just already inside the files adding song lyrics.

They should go onto your source files smoothly with MKVToolNix or play in any major media player that supports .ass subs.

As an aside while you're here, there is a Discord Server for Shiki translations but I also drop an update of any unpaid translations I do there. (Or paid if the payor doesn't mind it being shared and doesn't want exclusive claims to it, and it's not porn, or is porn of a franchise I'm otherwise known for translating and so of interest to general audiences.)

Other translation projects in various stages:

Hamatora Stage Plays - I've tried offering people $5.00 to just make a raw timed file for me so I can jump right to the dialogue/signage but nobody's working that cheap. I will eventually do these, if nobody else has done it for the requestor first, but that's the main hold up. My graphics card is crap and it stalls out a lot when trying to load videos in Aegisub, whereas if it's pre-timed I can just translate off the audio and then go through and touch up on visual stuff after the bulk is completed.

Banana Fish Stage Plays - I started on the older ones, but they wrote Max so annoyingly I dropped it. If anyone's really interested, I might pick it up again but the 2021 ones seem of better quality and more interest. Same deal, if someone pre-times a blank .ass file for me, the odds of me getting this done in a reasonable time frame are a lot higher. Otherwise this franchise is very popular so I bet someone else will get it done.

Tokimeki Memorial 4 Girl's Side - I'm not any kind of official translator or organizer or such on this, I'm just going to grab sections as they're available and time allows, but there is a Discord Server about this translation project if you're interested. This is also a popular franchise so whether I do anything or not it'll get done.

2019 is a tie in album for the anime Odd Taxi centered around Yano. All of them take place before episode 1 chronologically, but some contain spoilers.

Track 5 is made up of portions of Yano's raps from within the series, working backwards through the episodes. The licensed subs which managed to rhyme most of the time aren't terrible, but I did translate it fresh and accurately for completion. It also has a musical allusion to Sekiguchi's character song Panama.

It's worth noting that most Japanese songs and poetry don't rhyme. Yano's raps in particular have quite a few rhymes, but sometimes what makes it lyrical rather than plain dialogue are puns, alliteration, meter, or tongue twisters. The Japanese lyrics are included so that you can analyze and appreciate that as your skill level allows rather than having it lost in translation. Unlike many languages, Japanese is phonetically consistent enough that this is much more possible to do for a beginner or non-speaker by sight reading.

The guidebook included a four page short story/rap written by head script writer Konomoto Kazuya. It's titled Forbidden Fukuru Toji, the name for the print style where you have to break the seal to read it, to prevent in-store browsing. In the book itself you have to tear the pages open to read them. Included here as it's thematically related to the 2019 translation commission.

18 - 4

Shimotsuki - The eleventh month of the lunar calendar, which is around December. Literally translated as the frost month when the first frosts are beginning to show, the gods were said to be weakened at this time. Thus Shinto festivals called Kagura are held to ward off evil spirits or encourage and strengthen good ones. Traditional songs are performed with taiko drums, flutes and other classical instruments and the specifics of the dances and songs vary by locale. These traditions are practiced in advance and passed down primarily through oral tradition rather than in writing. Thus why it would be heard being practiced while walking through the village.

It is often an all night festival, with common customs include wearing Oni masks and spraying holy water.

In response to questions I've gotten, the novel is two hardback volumes broke out into several "books." The latter release of five paperbacks correspond to those "books" which in the hardback are only noted by some text. The hardback novels have denser pages with two rows of smaller print text, so one page in the hardback novel is about a page and a half to three pages of the paperbacks. The text itself is the same.

I own the hardcover volumes and at the end of Book 3, Chapter 17, we're on page 447 of the second volume.

Both volumes combined are 1,271 pages, putting us currently on page 992. We are 78% through the novel.

I'll take this opportunity to again let everyone know there's a Discord Chat where I post to notify of new translations. Here, people have sometimes deep, sometimes funny discussion of the novel, manga, and anime Shiki, as well as other Japanese novels, anime, manga, and Japanese games. Some people post fanworks. In the past someone did an analysis of the symbolism in the second ending theme song. Lately, someone had posted pictures of what seems to be a live action dead ringer for Sotoba (Kosuge Village in Yamanashi Prefecture, thanks HoTDead). People can request specific translations from the staff interviews or art book or the like. Gay Chinese novels seem to be a popular topic too. It's a community with an international spread, so don't be shy if English isn't your first language.

Both the hardcover and the paperback prints of the novel have covers done by artist Shinsaku Fujita. The artist's site is almost fully bilingual, if you're interested.

I wonder what he thought about when designing the Shiki novel covers. The hardbacks are both entirely scenic views, though the paperbacks have some people in them.

This is an example of the kind of discussions had in the Discord chat. I encourage people to have discussions here on Dreamwidth because people can come back and dig into a 3 year old discussion and insight with more ease than a moving chatroom, but these are the times. Also a lot of the discussion isn't particularly deep. Sometimes we just remark on whose genitals should rub together not because of anything deeper than how hot they look. And maybe part of the appeal is being given an excuse to restate your thoughts again and again and refine them over time in a moving chat rather than referring to prior posts.
